So I just finished reading a portion of my newest book “In-House Design in Practice”. This part was about communicating what you do as a designer when you are talking with non-designers. Some good information but I still thought they were overplaying the disconnect between what we as designers do and what other people think we do.

Then up walks my boy’s little league coach – a fantastic man, father and coach – and he asked what I was reading. So I show him the cover. Quizical look on his face. So I explain that our church has no design standards to keep things beautiful and consistent.

He replied “is that like interior design”.

I feel my man points quickly evaporating in his mind. I think he deals with nuclear technology or something and viewing me as an interior designer cant be good.

So I explain…you know, things like standard fonts we would always use, logo placement on print jobs and a common set of color standards that will help us present the church well.

More looks.

So I finished with something about it being an aquired taste.

And again I’m reminded there are two kinds of people in he world. God made some of us to care about brand management and some to not.

I love my side of that equation.

This afternoon has been so calm. Im on my front porch in the shade with the breeze – the sun shifting around the brick pillar towards my foot as it moves through the sky, my best friend (Amy of course) and these two little paperbacks.

Life is good.

Anyone else get this? Mine sets in about 9am on Sunday morning…right when things get rolling for me at the church.

All jobs are work. But I love the work God asked me to do. Tonight I’m running video for comedian Chonda Pierce and this is my view.

Read an interesting article this morning on a unique way to save money.

We try to coupon, but toner is really expensive so that has to be factored in. Apparently we weren’t thinking about all the possibilities that were available for us to save some cash.

And along comes the University of Wisconsin:
“The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has switched the default font on its e-mail system from Arial to Century Gothic. It says that while the change sounds minor, it will save money on ink when students print e-mails in the new font.”

Apparently they will save 30% more toner which is huge considering toner adds up to like 10k a gallon.

Genius.

Read the rest of the article here.

So, what do you do to save the money?

Read this today, thought I’d share it:

6 But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean on account of a dead body. So they came to Moses and Aaron that same day 7 and said to Moses, “We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the LORD’s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?”

8 Moses answered them, “Wait until I find out what the LORD commands concerning you.”

9 Then the LORD said to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body or are away on a journey, they may still celebrate the LORD’s Passover. 11 They are to celebrate it on the fourteenth day of the second month at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations.

The people had a very legitimate concern, valid questions about how God’s law applied to them so they came to Moses.  Moses said to wait until we hear what God thinks about it.

If only we took this approach more often – if only I took this approach more often.  Today let’s start again hearing from God before we decide on what our next decision should be.
