I don’t follow too many blogs, but I was super stoked to find one more to add to my reading list. For those of you who don’t know the name Donald Miller, you are about to receive a late Christmas present in the form of a link and a suggestion.

Donald MillerThe link is Donald’s personal blog:  http://donmilleris.com

The suggestion:  pick up a copy of Searching for God Knows What, Blue Like Jazz & To Own a Dragon and read them (find your local library and save some money)  Then scour the web for any audio or video you can find to watch this guy.  Or download some of his talks from the store:  http://www.donaldmillerstore.com/dlg/cart/ Hearing & seeing him teach, even on a video, is a great experience…unless you don’t like awesomeness.

You might not always agree with his politics – but you’ll be challenged in a good way.  And the man was born to be a writer…seriously.  Transparent, thoughtful and thought provoking.

btw, this post is linktastic

Happy Saturday,

So, here are three of my top choices, what are yours?

I know, two old and one new…it’s just so hard to find something timeless.

Nothing seems to expose my leadership weaknesses like my children.  Grrr and thank you.  They are so awesome and enjoyable at times and so stubborn at others (I wonder where they get that).  I heard yesterday that ultimately your family’s personality/state is a reflection of their father.  It’s hard to hear things like that.  I know there are many variables but ultimately I agree with that thought.  Which piles more frustration on me.

I know, they are young and not bad kids and we are still training and forming them into adults that will be ready for great things and hearing God’s leading in their lives – but I’m struggling this morning to let the past be the past and see the potential for the future.  More specifically, seeing and enacting the change right now to make the future better.  More enacting than seeing it I suppose…knowing what to do seems less of a mystery – having the discipline to walk that out is the tough part.

It’s a matter of leadership and I can’t let my kids mess that up.

Or more accurately, what is not sacred:

The only thing that is sacred is the mission.

The programs aren’t sacred.
The methods aren’t sacred.
The ministries aren’t sacred.
The service times aren’t sacred.
The communication style isn’t sacred.
The committees aren’t sacred.
The bylaws aren’t sacred.
The denomination isn’t sacred.
The style of music isn’t sacred.
The color of carpet isn’t sacred.
The font that’s used on in the bulletin isn’t sacred.

Sometimes we just need to be reminded.

From Scott Hodge

As I pray and plan, organize and cast vision for 2009, it is good to keep it simple and focus on what is sacred – what is always ahead of me is the mission of connecting people to a God who loves them.

What is your mission?
